Re: Buffalo Rifles

Large cal TARGET rifle ML or cartridge where used by hide hunters . Accuratcy was the most important thing , they could kill 100's a day easy . If you shot a buffalo standing on the outside of the herd , you could kill the whole herd from one position . If you hit one in the middle of the herd you would stampede them . They would pour water down the barrel to cool gun off and go back shooting again . The herds were almost gone when Sharp's 45-120 and the 50-140 came out . The muzzle loaders where a 2 man team on 1 gun . One cleaned and loaded and the other one shot . Lock's gun shop in Philly had a hide hunter ML hanging on wall , which had a barrel over 6 feet long on a bi-pod and I believe it was a 58 cal slug gun , been over 40 yrs since I seen it . The 50-100 was very popuar in lever guns and single shots cartridge guns . Tom Horn used a 45-60 lever to hunt meat for the railroad .
