I would have been really excited about this 2 years ago. Now I think it will be just another over priced Ruger to hit the market. If the price is reasonable I may own one, but I'm thinking it will cost way more than a Springfield and be no better.

Not sure what the price will be. From my understanding, Ruger has been casting Caspian frames for a long time, so it is not like they don't know how to do this. As the frames are cast, they should be cheaper than the forged guns. The Remington retails (at our store) for about $600, if I remember correctly (It may be $698). The article said it should be comparable in price to the Remington. Now, what concerns me is the rumor that it will have a mag disconnect and loaded chamber indicator. If true, they can keep it.

...given Ruger's track record on newly-released offerings in the past 5 years...I'll keep lusting after a MilSpec Springfield...plus they don't have an ambi safety...plus what Tim said about magdisc and LCI...we big boys know that ALL guns are loaded...don't need a flag...

I, for one, will be very glad and be the first one in line to buy a Ruger 1911, IF, and notice it is a big IF, they don't mess around with a perfect design and have a mag disconnect. If the loaded chamber indicator is just a notch in the barrel, as Kimber does, fine. I have no problem with that. But, if they have one that is like their SR9, they can keep them, as I said. Also, no external extractor for me either.

is this a belated april fool's joke?? if not, it's a pretty thing........but i fear the price..... Ruger has....at least in the past...built their company on the specific points of quality, reliable, and affordable----especially affordable....................ruger should learn from history as in their O/U shotgun line, mini 14, and their SR556 rifle. if it turns out high dollar ruger looses it target group of folks on a budget. Ruger seems to do quite well when you find their guns on shelves for under $500. When they get over that figure, ruger gets serious competition from a mulititude of other gun makers. The ruger o/u is an excellent example of a quality shotgun that once it hits a certain price teir, people look elsewhere........if you can afford a quality o/u, then you can afford to spend more than just a grand on a ruger and go browning or weatherby for the name recognition and features. Ruger production numbers on the o/u line is quite small. Bill Ruger had that gun built because he wanted one himself. Ruger bolt actions have also crossed the price barrier and still while a class "A" product, they are lossing ground. I do not see ruger bolts in stores as regular stocking items anymore. The mini 14 broke the price barrier going over $500 ($600 actually) and sales dropped as they went into direct competition with the low-end AR alternatives. now if ruger can intro this 1911 to compete as an American made product and keep the price at/under a Springfield "loaded" series, it just might work. If they are priced like colts, kimbers, and upper tier springfields............then why take the chance on ruger who is notorius here as of late for introducing new guns with quality control issues and a history of recalls? given a choice between a colt, kimber, or a ruger 1911 all priced the same.......i'll spend on the colt or kimber and pass on the ruger. I know colt and kimber has got it done right..........and the name recognition of colt and kimber also means the weapon will hold some value............ 2nd hand rugers........while generally still a very, very good gun.........do not hold onto their value dollar wise......unless they are an old model out of production vaquero nowadays...... now build this sucker say for around a hundred dollars more than an RIA tactical or similar foreign import?????? Advertise it as 100% American made? they would fly off the shelves. Price it two hundred over, it might tread water...........price it 300 over an RIA tactical.............it will sink like a trot line weight . its going to come down to the price. And i'm afraid to say the "budget" 1911 field and the "moderate priced" 1911 field is rather crowded with quality competition. Ruger's angle will most likely be ( i hope) an American made product. If ruger stumbles out the gate with this one with any issues, parts breakage, recalls, etc..........................it will sink. i hope ruger does well.........i really like and respect ruger. but the competition will be fierce, reputations are on the line, and the dollars available as "disposable income" in the pockets of consumers are getting fewer and fewer.................. |

I think it'll do well if they keep the price competitive with the Remington R1 and Taurus PT1911 but as you noted Deputy, when the price is around that of some of the Kimbers, Springfields, Colts etc.. people will probably pass it in favor of one of those. Ruger keeps it between $500 - $600 and I could see them selling a lot of these. And as Tim mentioned the mag disconnect and loaded chamber indicator (pop up type) are a turn off for many. If they leave out those things and stick with a lower price point they should sell a lot of them. |

They'll do like they did with the SR556. They'll load it up with all the bells and whistles and price it way over most people's budgets. On top of that, they'll add stupid safety features that nobody needs or wants. I'm pretty sure I know where their head is at anymore.

...Ruger could have OWNED the US double barreled SxS market...and they delivered an elitist high dollar gun that few could afford...betcha they'd made ten times the money if they'd made a 311 clone and sold thousands more...it's not about us anymore...but what they want to make...glad Tim's buying mine...I'm off the hook!!!

I'd still like a GP100 5 shot 44 special. I think that thing would sell out for the first 2 years in production. They couldn't keep up.

Yes a 5 shot 44 special GP would be mine as would a 5 shot 480 Blackhawk Hunter and a 4 5/8s Blackhawk.

...so instead we get cute li'l pocket guns that are too light to shoot much and semiautos that you load in the morning and you try to fire all week...P345 on have been poor in my opinion...your rifle, now, is a good one...they drop the best ones and produce this play-dough stuff...

i believe you are rignt............Bill Ruger did build what he liked.......don't blame him as he was the owner. Niche markets were addressed and product built for the general public. The most positive thing the current ruger leadership has done is address the ccw market in a serious fashion.......purty much an almost ignored large untapped market under Bill Ruger. The bad thing is the QC, which once upon a time was better than remington or s&w............has dropped and now is equivelent with them instead of superior. a 5 shot 44 spl.....problem is that the 44 spl carry snub is indeed a specialized limited niche market that has already been addressed by smith, taurus, and charter arms.....i doubt ruger would spend the r&d costs for such limited returns. that does not change the fact that it is desirable..............but probably not profitable.......enough.

That looks like it would be a lot of fun to kick around the woods with or doing some informal plinking on the range. I've shot .44 Specials though it's been awhile but never out of a SA revolver. A 200 or 240 gr. JHP @ 840 - 900 FPS would also be a nifty little goblin hammer.
