The last two times I shot my Kimber Ultra Carry, the slide has locked back with ammo still in the mag. Happened only one time last time I shot, happened 3 times today, out of around 60 rounds shot. I have read of this happening with other 1911s, although I have never had it happen to me. I thought I had it narrowed down to one mag doing it, but then it did it with another. I had read somewhere that you can "dimple" the slide stop, but am not at all sure how to go about that. I swapped the slide stop from my Colt into the Kimber, went back out and shot it 30 more times with no issues. Just ordered me a Les Baer slide stop for it from Midway. Until I get it, I will keep the Colt slide stop in it, as this is my carry gun, and it must work 100%.

...mechanically, I don't know, but sometimes shooters inadvertantly push the slide lock up with their thumb during the firing process...depending on the hold...

It's never happened with my Springfields and i hope it never does. The Les Baer will do fine. Hopefully this will fix it up 100%.

Nope. I always have my thumbs locked down. I don't shoot like the guys in IPSC. | |

I have had 1911s do this. My Kahr did it also with 180 grain ammo. Not often but as you say, a carry gun has top work. I relieved the lug on the slide stop slightly and it solved it for the Kahr. My Seecamp DA conversion works fine with ball but with 230 grain JHPs the nose profile is just enough different that the bullets sometimes push the slide stop when they are bumped forward by recoil. I don't want to modify the original slide stop so I will get a replacement and modify it to solve the problem.

...I don't see the need for a slide stop except as a takedown pin...train to shoot till snap instead of shoot to lock...a lot of us top off anyways...you can chamber by jacking the slide anyways...if you relieved quite a bit from the bottom edge, it would still serve as a manual slide stop just not be activated by the follower...what about that????

I would prefer a manual slide lock to one that locks on loaded magazines but I do like the slide to lock back when empty. I would try to top up as you say but I don't want to think I have a live round and just get a click when I pull the trigger. It's too easy to lose count under pressure. Movie makers seem to agree with you, Dog. They always have autos snap on empty chambers after exhausting the fifty or sixty rounds they seem to hold. |

Like, Mac, I too like the slide to stay open after the last round. I need to find one of them movie 60 round 1911's. Maybe it's just the magazine that's magic and will work in any old 1911? |

My son got me a 10 round Mag made by Pachmayr, and it will lock the slide open after every shot. It only goes to the range...
