For self defense, I have had good results in milk jug water test, which demonstrate expansion & penetration, with Hornady Critical Defense, Sig Sauer V-Crown.
You can find these tests of every available ammo on You-Tube. Most manufactures produce quality SD ammo. A general rule is to test at least 2 boxes of it through your carry gun to ensure proper function in your pistol. Don't cheap out, remembering that you may call on it to save your life.

As far as practice ammo, I try to use an ammo that matches the performance of your carry ammo. I reload, so I buy ammo that has reloadable brass, like Federal's red box ammo or Remington or Blazer Brass.
I load my practice/range ammo to match my SD ammo.

Are we talking the gun or the ammo?

Michael makes some excellent points on the ammo. As for the gun, way too many to even list all the good choices for both range and carry. Even the little Sig P938 I've used had outstanding accuracy and was fun to shoot at the range. Have also done very well with compact 1911s in 9mm. Also have a feeling you're going to get a lot of votes for the CZ 75.

If I were inclined to get a side shucker (as opposed to a nice revolver) and a 9MM (which is less likely) it would be:

Now for concealed carry:

So many choices! for both guns and ammo. I like most of us here have several guns in our personal collections that are chosen to fit the need of the occasion. I have chosen a Sig P320 Compact with a 10 round mag as my EDC but also carry a Taurus 709 Slim as the need arises. For rural areas, hunting / camping, I choose my S&W M&P 9 loaded with Buffalo Bore Hardcast flat nose Outdoorsman ammo!

For civil situations there are several manufacturers that have matched their Defense and Target loads for better practice.

Sorry, I don't know why I just assumed ammo, probably because I reload.

Right now, it is hard to beat the rebates S&W are giving on their Shield. I would go with the 9mm, due to ammo costs & stock up now before the next crisis.

I also recommend finding a range the has a new shooter program & they will allow you to try a variety of pistols before purchase. CZ has a new line of pistols out that are nice, but NCG is correct, If I had to pick 1 & sell the rest, it would be my CZ 75B Omega. Accurate with flawless function & all steel construction to last a long time.

I use Winc factory 180 gr jacket HP loaded for the FBI for defense and I reload my 180 gr cast bullets to shoot at the same FPS and the POA is the same . I save over $ 18 a box of 50 with the same feel and recoil too . You can do the same with a 9mm too . I like all my HP ammo to shoot the heavies bullet in that cal all to reach 1000 fps so the HP will open up and work . This is my opinion ......
