When I was in S.E. Asia, several of us decided that to be cool we had to have AK47's and managed to get them. We started hearing rumors that Vietnamese were being found with exploded weapons, but we paid them little heed. One morning on the way back in, we found that very thing. Young Newyen's weapon had detonated and he was, 'hoist with his own petard', so to speak. That was enough for most of us and we desposed of ours and went back to M16's. A year or so ago, I was reading my latest copy of American Rifleman and there was a story about this very thing. Seems the CIA had managed to procure several cases of 7.62X39 ammo and had replaced the powder with C4. They then gathered several more cases of the same and randomly replaced rounds with the really hot stuff and put it back into the field. The results were entertaining, to say the least. One must wonder if they're at it again, after watching this clip. Molon Labe Kim |

...typical stupid gooberment idea...I personally know GIs who, in combat, lost use of their Mattel rifle and had to fight for their life with a "borrowed" AK...I hope none of them ever touched off such a round...all's fair in love and war, but that one put OUR troops at risk...as well as any users of imported ammo from such countries...or countries that they've traded with...these rounds could circulate and pop up all over the world for 40-50 years or more...much like our old friends who have since become our enemies...

Perhaps I didn't explain this well, it was not, in my opinion, a bad idea. When you consider the odds against a GI actually firing tainted ammunition, it must be astronomical. The idea was not to inflict casualties, but to cause a lack of faith in the other side's tools. Not a new idea and has been done, probably since the invention of gun powder. Don't know about the first world war, but we did it to the Japanese and the German Jews working in the munitions factories did the same thing to the German Army. Sorry if I got your undies in a wad. I read that too, Kim. I too think it was a good idea. The enemy were too scared to use their ammo a lot of the times. |
