New Extractor for my 10/22s

I got to say, changing the extractor in my 10/22s was a great thing. Was having some feeding issues with both of mine (with cheap ammo), and bought two Power Custom extractors. Completely cured my feeding issues (in the one I managed to get done). The problem is, I got to wait for a new plunger from Ruger, cause while changing one of the extractors, my hand slipped and the spring and plunger are nowhere to be found!!!!!!

In fairness to my 10/22s, it would feed CCI Mini Mags and good ammo just fine. I am just cheap.

I'm cheaper. I don't put a nickle into my 10/22's.

I don't think they are designed to feed nickles.

were these older production 10/22 rifles or the current production with the plastic trigger guards?

Isn't it just amazing how those little rascals can just jump into a paralell universe. You woudn't think that little spring could make light speed, but they seem to.

Mine seems to like the cheapo Walmart Federal bulk packs. That's what it gets 99% of the time although I've ran some of that Mexican Aguila ammo through it as well without a hitch.

I use the Federal Bulk as well. I used to get it for $11 per 550 rounds. The 10/22's were even more fun then.

That is what I have used for years. When I first bought them they where $8.98! Now they are $18.98.

Re: New Extractor for my 10/22s

Got my new plunger today from Ruger and installed the new extractor with no problems. I ordered two, just in case! If you have any feeding problems with a 10/22, I highly recommend the Power Custom or the Volquartson extractors. Just make sure you keep your finger in front of the extractor spring when you change them!!!!!

Re: New Extractor for my 10/22s

i just picked up a 10/22 sporter. When i took it out it had a couple failed extractions. I'm going to tear it down and give it a good cleaning...if it persists i'll change the extractor.

How big of a PITA is changing the extractor?

Re: New Extractor for my 10/22s

It is not that bad really. There are a couple videos on youtube that shows you how to do it. Basically, you just need a sharp awl type tool to hold the plunger and spring back and then work the extractor loose and replace it the same way. Just learn from me and use a bag or something so you don't lose it!

Re: New Extractor for my 10/22s

quick up date on the sporter..

after a take down cleaning, all is well. I fired 70 rounds without a hitch....however i did find after i removed the scope mount for cleaning that 2 of the holes are stripped. So I'm either gonna have to retap them or leave them open and use open sights. Kinda leaning towards the open sites, this older version is much more accurate that my new models.

I use the irons on mine. Shoots pretty good and it's a new one.
