new rifle

Well guys, after 30 something years with no 'true' deer hunting rifle I finally found a deal I couldn't resist. My LGS saw me come in a couple of weeks ago and motioned me to the side counter. Now he knows I'm a confirmed Ruger devotee, and he has held many a gun behind the counter to show me before he puts them up in the showcase. This time he pulls up a full size old ragged out rifle case, and asks if I'm interested in a deer rifle. So I have thoughts of Ruger #1s or M77s and he pulls out a Remington 7400 in 270. This thing had really nice wood, not a scratch and the box of cartridges has three missing. The previous owner bought it, fired three rounds to sight in and never shot it again. After owning it for a dozen years, He brought it in as a trade for something else and I got it for a very good price. It came with rings mounted and I had a 4x Simmons mounted to try it out. Got to go with a better scope though, the little Simmons just won't hold a zero with the recoil.
Now I've got to get some dies, bullets and powder and try some reloading. This could be fun!

Re: new rifle

I have never shot a 270. Sounds like a good find. Did you hunt deer with something else all these years?

Re: new rifle

My first centerfire rifle was a 7400 in 30/06. Good guns. I traded it off cause it wouldn't feed my reloads. Would feed factory ammo just fine though. I sighted in one at work last week in .270 for a guy. Once I got it zeroed, it would do about an inch or so at 100 yards.

Re: new rifle

congrats!!!!!!!!!

what i liked about the semi-auto remington and brownings was not the fast repeat fire but the change/reduced recoil.

You might be right about the scope....i was taught that semi's are actually harder on the scope because of the rearward and then more importantly the forward cycling of the action.............don't know if there is any truth to it but its what i've been told a long time and also been told air rifles are hard on a scope for the same reason.......forward recoil motion.

Re: new rifle

.270 is my favorite. I've killed more critters with it than any other.

Use to hunt years ago with a Ruger Blackhawk in 45colt, and then the Marlin 44mag carbine, and the last couple of times with the little Martini Cadet in 357max.
I have not had a place to go since moving to central LA so hopefully I will get the chance as my son is on a hunting lease with some friends that is quite promising.
The 270 has a recoil that is very comfortable to shoot, softer than most other HP hunting rifles I have shot.
