Anyone use this? I'm hearing it's good stuff for coyotes. I may use a shotgun after all. I don't know much about shotguns and have never even heard of #4 buckshot. Is this ok to shoot in any smooth bore barrel? Can it be shot out of a rifled barrel? I may pick up a 2nd barrel for my Mossy and I'm not sure what to get. Edumacate me! |

I never had one in shotgun ranges ever , Most all the yote I shot in Ca was 300 to 500 yards , using this gun scoped and with a thumb hole wood stock . That's why I built this gun for originally and carry on my dirt bike easy . |

...I'd call 50 yards a pretty far shot on #4 or #1, either...pattern some at those distances and shoot an old phone book...I don't think you'd get a clean kill that far away...smooth bore's fine the wads mostly have plastic sleeve walls to protect the barrel...don't think it'd hurt a rifled barrel for the same reason...but if I were carrying a rifled barrel...it'd be lead slugs for me...

I'm reading that the #4 buckshot is good out to as far as 60 yards. The area I'm going to hunt isn't going to allow for shooting much further anyways. It's shot guns or hand guns. I'm still debating.

It'll work, but I wouldn't shoot much past 40 yards. Federal makes some tactical stuff called Flite Wad, I know they make it in 00 but I don't know about 4. See what you can find, at 30 yards this stuff shoots groups not patterns. Molon Labe Kim |

I'm thinking 40 yards is about tops for the area anyway. I was just going to use good old fashioned 00 buck, but I figure it's probably way too much for fox and coyote.

There is nothing wrong with 00 if you you're hunting yotes and foxes. It might be more than you need for just foxes though. Smaller shot ='s more pellets, so go with the smallest you can reasonable use. While it won't hurt to shoot any shot loaded shells out of a rifled barrel, they aren't designed for it. The rifling will spin the wad as it leaves the barrel and will blow your pattern wide open and leave it looking like a big doughnut. Regular rifled slugs aren't even designed to shoot out of a rifled barrel. They are meant for shooting the more expensive saboted slugs. Get a full choke if you have screw in choke tubes (an extra full turkey choke is even better if you can find it). Do not be afraid to go 50 to 60 yards with a full choke and 00 (Trust me on this one, my BIL is hell on the coyotes and I hunt with him quite a bit). We can hunt yotes at night here, but you're not allowed to use a center fire rifle at night, so we use 12 gauge's (along with a .22 mag or .17 HMR). They work great for wooded areas. Varmints can come in really fast. Shooting them at 300-500 yards is great if your shooting over the prairies, but around here you almost never get shots that long due to trees and hills. As a last note, I believe your gun is able to shoot 3 1/2" shells. While they are not pleasant to target shoot with as they kick like a damn mule, they are effective, so for hunting, stick the longest shell your gun will chamber; weather it's 2 3/4", 3", or 3 1/2". If you really want a hard hitting 12 gauge load, get a box of Federals "Dead Coyote". They're not cheap, but they hit like the hammer of Thor. What ever you get, pattern the gun by drawing a 10" circle (the aprox size of a yotes vitals) on a piece of cardboard, and shoot it from the farthest distance you would be willing to take a shot from. If there are even one or two pellets in that circle the bastard is going to die. It might not be right away, and you might have to track him a bit, but a dead coyote is a good coyote. All though most of them melt right on the spot, or shortly there after. |
