Types of ammo

Is there any type of ammo that I shouldn't shoot with the new Mossberg? Is it ok to shoot, buckshot, slug and steel shot? I really don't know a lot about shot guns and I know nothing about chokes. I don't know if the choke, or even barrel, can be damaged shooting certain ammo.

Re: Types of ammo

Does it have screw in choke tubes? If so, most of the ones that come with the guns are not meant for steel, and if you choose to shoot a lot of it, you should get a choke that is rated for that. It won't hurt the gun to shoot small amounts of it though, especially through a more open choke.

Other than that you can shoot any type of load you want out of it. The only other thing to consider is that you probably shouldn't go any tighter than a modified choke to shoot slugs. Your accuracy will suffer, and if you went too tight (like extra full) you could have pressure problems.

I should be good then. I don't plan on shooting steel out of it anyway.

Re: Types of ammo

Cool. I actually bought some #4 lead 3" magnum shells tonight. I'm going to test them tomorrow. The #4 buck is almost $12 for 5. If I don't think the ones I got will work for coyote, I'll get the #4 buck. I'm sure the #4 shot will work for fox. I don't even know if I'll see any, so until I actually get a shot at one, it's all a guess to me.

Re: Types of ammo

........the basic problem is distance. But anything that will kill a turkey will kill a fox.

by the way, are we talking red or gray fox?

Our season includes Red and Grays. We have mostly Reds from what I've seen.

Re: Types of ammo

Ya can kill a yote with turkey loads no problem. But there isn't going to be much left of the fox or the yote with that choke pal. I have had good luck using Winchester #4 shot on yotes its high brass high loads. Of couse that was in my younger days when I didn't wear glass's. Here we can bait them in sardines work well as does cheap can cat food. The many problem with sardines is that most times ya get the sunks coming your way. 60 yards is about as far a shot ya will get with a shotgun, but with that choke it might get ya some extra range. Yotes can run from a dead stop to 40 mpr in a blink of and eye. The good thing about a shotgun is that ya can lead them more and still get a killing shot. Hope this helps. I myself have never shot steel, I wouldn't shoot steel shot out of my shotgun just because its my shotgun.

6 month season up here on fox. We had a rabies problem a few years ago. It seems we do about every 5 years or so. Had a guy mowing his lawn get bit and the guy who was at his house with him. The fox jumped out of some hedges and attacked both of them and ran.

I did notice it's a lot cheaper than lead though.

Re: Types of ammo

Yes it is but I have been shooting lead shot out of my shotguns for years. I am not so sure that you could say that with steel shot.

Re: Types of ammo

...#4 buck gives you in a 12 27 pellets...I think #1 buck gives you 21...but I believe the larger pellet would buy you a bit more range...am I correct????

Re: Types of ammo

If it does, Sheepdog, it won't be much. The longer range would come from a longer cartridge with more powder and shot I would think. Since posting this I've learned that the 2 3/4" shells are fine. The bigger ones get to hurting after a few rounds.

Re: Types of ammo

Steel shot will not hold a pattern as well as lead shot, the 3 1/2 inches shot shell are made to compete with the 10 ga shot. For the Geese hunters not much you can do with a 10 ga once the season is over but a 12 ga in 3 1/2 you can still use 2 3/4 inches shell in. Anyhow that is wha t a gun shop own told me then added he didn't sell any 3 1/2 inches shot guns lol.
Sorta like a the 375 winchester the old 30/30 was doomed ya right.
