Opinions on a shotgun scope. Should I go with a red dot no magnification type, or a low powered scope? I'm thinking a 2.5 - 4x 40mm. But a red dot would probably work out ok too.

Just depends on how good your eyes are. I have used red dots on my shotguns out to a hundred and not had any problems. If you think you might get shots longer than a 100, say in the 150 range, you might want a low power scope. As a general rule, think 1x of magnification for ever 25 yards. That makes a 2-7 "optimal" from about 50 to 175 yards, the practical limits of most people with a 12 gauge.

red dot with no magnification........... huge field of view for running shots. unlimited eye relief so you can move the optic from shotgun to rifle to handgun if you like and make the most of it. heck, with the right one you can co-witness sights/red dot with an ar15 A3 if ya go that route |

I was leaning towards the red dot for the reasons you all stated. Any suggestions on a good one that'll hold up under the stress of the 12?

I've put a Bushnell Trophy on mine and had good results. It's stood up to some of the nastiest turkey and slug loads I could throw at it... http://www.cabelas.com/p-0006806711207a.shtml |

i've used basicly two in the past a bunch on t/c contenders in 44 mag and 22 LR. they were the millet std 1" http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?p ... ber=459296 and the bushnell holosight-----which is no longer on their web page but it was essentially a civilian version of the eotech which ought to make it a dang good one. i actually had the bushnell holo co-witnessed with the irons as well on the ar15A3.......sweet! unfortunately the eotech's are probably in the $400 range the millet is around $80 |

That fast Fire is one of the ones I was interested in. The price is a little more than I want to pay though. I'm hoping to score one for around $100. Mostly I'm concerned about the scope holding up to the recoil of the 12. I guess I'll get what I pay for.

My local carries those, John. I'll have to look into one. I bought a one piece Weaver top mount for it. Will the scope work with it? The red dot I have will not. |

That's the one I'd like to have. Looks like it would work real fast for fox and coyote, but the price a little higher than I can afford right now. | |
