Made a trade last winter and ended up with a well used 20 ga. Mossberg 500. been looking at it all spring everytime I'm out in my private room in the garage. I decided I need a BLACK shotgun,so this week I removed the stock and forearm. Carefully masked off the still good pressed checkering and gave the wood a coat of gray primer, followed by a coat of flat black. Couldn't wait to get the making tape off. Turned out sort of striking. Now a Black gun doesnt look right with a 26 inch barrel. Didn't want to spend any money for a plane short barrel ,So yep ! new hacksaw blade and 3 files ,it now wears a 20 1/2 inch vent rib barrel. Now I have a combination slug and house gun. Some will say I ruined it and others will say it looks sharp. What the heck! I'm happy with it. |

SheepDog. Didnt blue it but used a black sharpie on it after I squared off the end and polished it with different grades of sand paper on a block. Plan on drilling and putting the original White bead back on as soon as I find the correct tap. Not sure if its factory or not but is drilled and tapped with four holes for a scope mount. |

I use Ox-pho blue from Brownells. It is not a nice looking blue but is a phosphate finish and quite protective. I used it to finish a S&W Mod 10 I buffed out and use it on small gun areas I file or grind. I also use it to protect tools I make from steel. It is easy to use and holds up well to prevent rust. I found it in gun stores here. A small bottle lasts a long time for touch ups and small parts. I usually apply it with a Q-tip or a patch. You can but it on over slight surface rust with steel wool and it will leave a clean and rust free surface. It's a mottled gray look.

Claybird, I picked up a Mossy 500 in 12 gauge for the same purpose about a year ago. The barrel was round, and I was able to use a pipe cutter for a nice cut. The barrel is now 18.25". I too used a black sharpie on the end. I didn't paint the wood black though. I'm too lazy. |

Mac beat me to the reply - and I've used the Ox-Pho blue as well. It woun't match th eregular blueing on the gun but that won't matter since you are only touching up the end of the barrell and the vent rib. Birchwood-casey makes a deep blue that works OK if doing touch up but I can always tell. I completely stripped down a well used MEC 600 press and reblued all the steel parts. Look almost new. Just got to keep it well oiled when in storage.Like to see some pice of that Mossy 20 if you get time, claybird. |
