survival food

If you couldn't buy another morsel of food how long could you feed your family with what you have in your house?

Well, it would take awhile to eat the fish and game in the freezer, add to that the can goods and obligatory ramen noodles and I'd say I could stay fat-n-happy for at least six months. If you count the garden and livestock I'd say near indefinitly.

We would be fine, might be some grumbling because there are no cheeto's but we'd eat.

All throughout my youth, it was a rare day all the food we ate wasn't from the ground we walked on. Today, it seems I make a point of stating an entire meal came from the ground we walk, when it happens, which is rare.

We even sold eggs and milk.

I keep and try to rotate through the dried beans, rice, powdered milk, and some other bulk items. If we cut back to minimalist eating then I think we could go a while. We have retention ponds with some fish in them, but I think they would get fished dry in no time since some people have no sense. Being a Floridian, it just makes sense to have at least a month of non perishables in case of a hurricane. But in a SHTF type event... I can't say for sure I wouldn't starve, but I would start taking any and all measures as fast as I could to prevent it.

When I was in the working world we had a Regional Maintenance Manager that was in maintenance then and at a facility in Homestead, FL when Andrew went thru in 1992. He said never again. "The hurricane is headed my way and I'm going in the opposite direction". Always thought that was good advice. He had an RV as well and so my plan is hook up and visit (or make new ones) friends in the Dakota's.

The average diet should be around 2,000 calories a day although some people eat twice that much. A rationed emergency diet is around 1,200 calories per day. If you ever see an ad for 30 days of survival food it is based on the 1,200 and some times even less.

I recently bought 24 cases of survival food and stocked up on canned goods at Costco. At 2,000 per day each my wife and I could live six months. Longer if we stretch it and even longer if we could ad food along the way. Mentioned earlier by someone was spices. I have 15,000 seeds of veggies and spices. They are survival packed and will last years if keep cool and dry.

Great advice, it is worth noting that heirloom seeds are worth the extra effort, could be that you may need to grow off of the seeds you generate.

Well, if we cannot buy food, do not expect to have commerical electric pwr., so re-think frozen food.

Propane refers are very efficient. I don't have frozen food for emergencies but use a propane refer while camping all the time.

I store rice, beans, pasta and such in mason jars. We have some canned food and other dry goods. Beans and nuts are a good source of proteins. I have chickens and eggs, turkeys, pigs and cows at my disposal. There is some game around the house.

So, just eating the dry goods alone. 3 to 6 months maybe.
I am trying to learn more botanicals than I already know to eat what grows naturally in this area.
I have some MRE's. Those are huge on calories!
I don't have but am getting a dehydrator

I have a well on the property even though we get our water from the community co-operative well.

Depending on what happens, we may have to bug out.
Is everything here the ultimate plan, heck no. An underground shelter would be nice.

I tailor my plan little by little. Hope for the best, expect the worst. Luck favors the prepared.

I have nectarine, plum and pear trees too. That would ruin them

Yep, God Forbid, or biological.
I am not far from Camp Lejeune and a few other bases.

Brother, my only consolation if things get that bad is, that I've led a good life.

True enough, I figure I have enough generator fuel to keep the sub zero going till I could smoke, dehydrate and eat up a fair amount of protien. I'm of the mind that no single source of anything is adequate, frozen food backed up by can goods and dehydrated foods, electric service backed up by a generator or two, mulitple sources of water and/or purification capability, etc.

What's that saying that seems to be so pop today, two is one, one is none. I'm not so sure how that plays in an overall context but when it comes to food and water I find it applicable.

If a nationwide calamity does happen I suspect it will be a super volocano like Yellowstone letting go. If that happens we better all go live with James cause it's going to get cold around here that is if the ash doesn't outright kills us first. I'll be like a canary in a coal mine and the first to go from the respiratory distress caused by the ash. Oh well I got some of my Social Security money back that I paid in.
