Never owned a bolt action before for deer hunting, thinking about finding a good used Winchester Mod. 70 is 30-06 or would another cal. be better?

Personally I think the 308 winc is better round , all your long range target guns and sniper guns switched from 30-06 to 308 . Winc 70 and Ruger a great gun but there action are dated , the lock time are super slow . This was my over 100 yds hunting gun . I'm going to sell it since my health wouldn't let me go hunting anymore . I have it sighted in 275 yds . Anything under 100 yard I used my 92 Rossi in 44-40 with tang sight .

I like the .30-06...There's little you can't do with one.

I am very happy with my Savage Axis in .308 Win.
Not very expensive even with a scope, and very accurate

Didn't find one yet almost hunting season, will just use my good old 30-30 this year and see is I can come up with a nice bolt action with a good scope for next year, not that I need one I just want to see what it's like to hit something further away than the range of a lever gun.

I use a Mossberg 100 ATR in .308. Deadly accurate and not to expensive of a rifle..

Quite the scope you have on that Mossberg bet that set up is real accurate.

If I were to take up hunting again, I'd give a long look to the new Ruger American, and I'd get it in 30.06. Yes, the cartridge is old, but millions of long-deceased deer can attest to the fact that it works...especially when the shooter puts the round where it needs to go. Of course, that's true, regardless of caliber. Anyhow, nothing wrong with a .308; just stating my personal preference.

As a kid all I heard was 30.06 or 30-30. Seemed like those were the main two calibers.
