S&W 686 question

I was looking at my 686 yesterday and noticed the screw on my thumb slide is missing. I found the slide but no screw in the safe. I checked the S&W web site and it looked like I can just order one online but I wanna make sure I get the right screw. Any suggestions

Just give S&W a call (avoid peak call times), but for the price of a screw you wouldn't be out much if it didn't work. I would expect that that particular screw is a fairly standard part widely used on various models of S&W revolvers. They also sell other parts and accessories on their website, so you might want to work up an order, anyway.

One thing I do on a periodic basis with our Smith revolvers is check that screws aren't working loose. They can on the magnums when you shoot them a lot. I've had the hammer spring tension screw under the grip work loose a bit with a lot of magnum shooting. Not enough tension on the hammer spring and you risk light strikes.

I re-torque screws on most of my firearms I use regularly. In particular any sight or scope screw.

You got the owner manual?

Look at the schematic.

Like North Country Gal said,
Give S&W a call not during peak calling times.

They will probably just send you one.
