Here is my newest gun, A Smith and Wesson 500 Magnum Revolver 4" barrel Big Rock Edition. S&W says it will stop any animal walking on earth and after shooting it I believe so.
I shot it for the first time Sunday night with Hornady 300 grain Custom ammo, it was a blast (pun not intended, but funny anyway).
The gun is set up with specialized Hogue grips, muzzle brake, etc. to help reduce recoil, needless to say it is a handful, but not as much as I expected. I shot about 10 rounds, 1 single handed. It is not a handgun for the beginner or the faint of heart, however I have shot a 44 Mag with a longer barrel (I can't remember the maker though) that kicked harder.
S&W did a great job designing this gun and I really do plan on bear hunting with it.

I carried Redhawk in 44 mag / 5 1/2" in bear country . I have small hand and it was only 44 mag that I could reach the trigger and shoot DA . I had a S&W 629 which has the grip as your 500 S&W which is to big for me to shoot DA but you got to love the S&W shooting it SA . I would like to put 5 rounds down range 1 time only :-D. I would love to see a 10 round shot on paper at 25 yds . Do you hand load or cast your own bullet ? I bet with reduce loads it will out shoot both the 44 and 45 cartridge .

It does have very nice trigger, really lite in SA and still good in DA. I don't do my own loading. It is very accurate and for such a big, powerful gun, it is surprisingly easy to shoot.

Lol. I stilled a video we made frame by frame to get that picture, it is less than 1 second long but it is one heck of a muzzle flash. I definitely needed ear plugs too.

Thanks for sharing, buck.

Might seem a bit odd for a gal to say this, but I've shot my share of big handguns. Crazy me, I still like shooting the big boomers. I usually wear a padded shooting glove and wrap my wrist with athletic tape and that helps, but I've found mag-na-porting, muzzle brakes and so on to be a big help. Looks like S&W did a good job designing yours.

Never tried the 500 S&W, but have shot a 454 and, even worse, my Encore pistols in 30-06, 45-70, and, gulp, 444 Marlin. Don't have those Encore chamberings, anymore, but I have been shooting my Encore 209x50 muzzleloading pistol, of late, and with heavy loads, ouch, right there with the 444 Marlin in the recoil department. The things some of us do for fun! :)

Have talked to a couple of guys shooting those big Smith X frames and one of them claims that the 460 S&W is worse than the 500 in felt recoil for him. Maybe why I see a lot of used Encore barrels in 460 for sale.

Thank you North Coutry Gal, Smith did do a great job designing this gun to tame the recoil. It is kinda funny how gun folks like trying the big bores. I love them.
303Lihgow, that's kinda how the 500 is, more of a push than a sharp kick.

You're welcome.

I've hear that about the 500 versus the 460, the 500 being more of a hard push with the 460 definitely being more of a sharp kick. Kind of like the 480 Ruger versus the 454 or like shooting a heavy load in my muzzleloaders compared to shooting a 30-06.

Hand Cannons are my thing, too.

I shoot 350 gr 500s regularly. I shoot 25 per outing.

The 500 gr is unpleasant to me. I've done 15 rounds but I don't care for it.

I load 50 rounds of 454 Casull to share amongst 3 revolvers.

Only do 20 rounds of 460 since it's dialed in for hunting.

50 rounds of 44 Magnum is my usual.
