Not just another 44 mag

When in to a gun shop and seen it for the 10 x in 2 years . It only took S&W almost a 100 yrs to make a 44 mag that I can shoot DA . It is a 5 shot which allow for thinner cylinder and moves the cylinder stop between cambers for a stronger cylinder . It is built on a strong N frame with K or L grip for people with small hands and it will make a great backpacker guns . You can shoot 44 spec or mags . Mac told me about this gun a couple years ago . I've been selling my guns and not buying them at this time in life . I must bit my bottom lip so I don't buy it . It is not cheap but I got lots of money so it not that . The 44 spec matches the 45 ACP but has a rim for revolver and still be able to shoot full house mags for people in live in bear country .

TGR, I know you've been looking at those Model 69s for a long time and wanting one. Why not just go ahead and get it? Sounds like it has your name on it, anyway. Get a box of 44 Specials and go out and have some fun.

Have had quite a variety of Smith 44 mags and have never been disappointed in any of them, though some, of course, were better shooters than others. All were decently accurate to exceptionally accurate. I especially like that ball detent lockup on the 69. It's what Smith uses on their PC 44 mags and their big X frame 460s and 500s. I would think the 69 would be tough enough to handle all the 44 mags you want.

As for me, I keep trying to simplify the types of guns I shoot for the sake of practicality and consistency in my shooting. My carry needs are 99% woods guns and for that, I now only go single action. DAs have no advantage for me, there. When I do need a bad guy carry gun, I have my little DAO Kimber 357. The few semi autos we have, left, are now range guns, only. Have gone cowgirl in a big way over the this fall and winter and won't be looking back. Shooting single actions as you well know, is part art and part technique and I dislike breaking away from that to shoot other types of handguns.

For instance, my Blackhawk 45 Convertible weighs only about an ounce and a half more than the Model 69 and, of course, I can shoot any kind of 45 Colt load in it, even grizzly loads, not to mention the cheap to shoot 45 auto. My Single Seven weighs less than the 69 by a couple ounces and gets me seven shots of 357 power levels, if need be and feels better in the hand than a K frame Smith and way better than a Ruger GP100. The Seven gets me two more shots than a Ruger SP and has a much better trigger.

When I want to shoot 44 mags, now, I just grab my 5 1/2" Super Blackhawk and am quite happy. Shoots just as well as any 44 mag Smith.

Do give yourself a break, though, and have some shooting fun with that 69. That's my vote.

I need to get my herd much smaller not make it larger . . My 44-40 sheriff Vaquero with level 3 loads or 44-40 HV ammo will out perform the 44 mag and my cowboy loads are at level 1 which is 44 spec now . I don't need a high dollar gun for my "X" or girlfriend to sell . Since I shoot a SA faster and better then a DA there is no chance I will sell my 44-40 sheriff model Vaquero I made for a any big bore DA gun as much as I love that SW 69 but it don't look like it is in the card for me . .

I do understand. I feel the same way about my single actions. DA revolvers offer no advantage for me other than some of the DAO guns for pocket kind of carry. Like you, I am better with my follow up shooting in SA than in DA.

Hey TGR what good is a relationship with someone if you can't be a pain in the butt after you go. Get the 44 and enjoy it. The more fun you have the more you'll want to stick around.

If I buy SW 69 and I die , she will sell it for about 1/2 the price I PAID FOR IT .. Plus I no longer have any brass or reloading dies for 44 mag or 44 special . I have tons of .429 bullets , primers and gun powder for 44 mag since my 44-40 shoots the same stuff .

Here in Tx we can have machine guns and for $200 for a stamp and $100 for a auto sear I can convert 1 of my 40SW Glock's in less then 5 mins to rock and roll .. For another $109 I can covert 1 of my 40SW to 9MM or 357 Sig . So I will pass on the SW as much as I want it . .

It's so old, that I think this thread was maybe the first I ever heard of the Mdl 69, and it now sits in my nightstand. I love the gun. Not as bad as you might think with std power 44 mags, but my favorite ammo with it is the LAX 44 mag with 240 gr FMJ and just over 1000 FPS. Has 44 Spl's in it for nightstand duty.
