...after many frustrating months of little work and no gunsmithing money on the horizon, I got out my Winchester 1200 28" barrelled 12 ga...favorite shotgun ever...first riot gun...and I'd looked for this copy for years...finally found one...and it's been long, loaded, and well-oiled for all this time...around a year...patiently waiting...I'd checked prices on barrels but you know which way they're headed...weren't gonna happen soon...so, I wrapped the barrel in packing tape, marked 18 1/2, and went to my 10" trim saw with 40-tooth carbide blade...first cut had a little slope to it...second was straight and ten minutes with my Dremel later, I have an obviously amateur but respectable job, and the gun I've been waiting for...I put a snap-on fiberoptic sight on it..aligned it with the grooves atop the receiver, and I'm as happy as a pig in a cherry pie...and an official member of BH's chop-it club...though I'll probably have to sit by myself... ...my first one was brand new, done by a great gunsmith and sported an Ithica Raybar orange glow front bead...no longer made...well, so isn't the shotgun...I've got a nine-shot pump with an 18 5/16" barrel...and the tube's shorter'n the barrel...figure that one out!~~ anyone know where I can get a bayonet lug for a Winch 1200??? |

Good job, dog! I used a pipe cutter on my barrel. Works like a charm. |

OK guys, cause of you, I have to ask a question. I havea Model 97 Winchester takedown with a 28" barel. I know they are popular for CAS. Would I reduce value, what ever it is, by cutting it down or should I just trade it for one with an extended mag and shory barel?

Don't cut on it. There aren't very many of them around anymore. Don't know if you can find a short barrel for one and I'm relatively sure no one makes an extended tube for one. If Gunrunner ever comes up for air, he can tell you for sure about them. I'd maybe be interested if you decide to sell it. Molon Labe Kim |

...I took a brand new tubing cutter and it tracked down the barrel...with the slight taper, it spiralled a groove like an old gramophone...thankfully towards the muzzle...that's why I went to the chopsaw... ... |

i would not cut it unless i just had to have that paticular action in riot configuration.........sheepdog chose to cut his as he seems to be a winchester 1200 fanatic.. ![]() My opinion, the winchester 1897.........there are better actions out there for riot purposes............newer actions with less wear and tear on them and newer models with easy parts availability and after-market resources such as the remington 870 and the mossberg. I sure ain't saying the winchester 1897 is a dog...........they have seen a lot of service.............but at the same time, i can see old guns as getting "tired" with worn parts and other wear and tear issues that could get aggravating.............and that is one issue i can do without in a self-defense weapon.......especially a weapon that is going to be seeing full power buck and slug loads. if i was not married to it and dedicated to it, i'd trade her off or sell her.......................you could get a new or low milage shotgun out of the deal and make someone who loves old guns very happy............a win-win situtation. |

...+1 on that...you could trade into a Winchester 120 or 1200 0r 1300 and have a strong, slick pump for SD purposes...and someone would love the gun that Grandad had...or your copy of it...I would not cut it either... ... if your gun is fully functional...I'd expect an even trade...even for an 870 or Ithica pump, if you can find those...with a Mossberg I'd want some shells to boot..they're a good Chevy but not an Olds or Caddy... |

Thanks guys. I origionally got it for CAS but never got started. Well, that and because it was a neat old gun. I have a nice Mossy 500 but gave it to my son, he stores it in my save so it doesn't get lonely. I also have one of those nasty Black Bennelli Novas but that and the Mossy are for hunting. My local has two hi-cap shrot bareled 870s for $345 each so may have a chat with him. Guess I will check out the value if the 97. I did chek out the serial number at one time and it was borne in the early 1900s, and had a gunsmith check it our. Said it was mechanically very sound.
