Henry Big Boy 44 mag problems

Hello all, new guy here with my first post.
I recently purchased a new Henry Big Boy all weather in 44 mag. I really like the fit & finish and dig the hardened chrome idea. I took it out to the range yesterday with some white box Winchester 240 grain JSP. The gun shot good until 8 rounds into the first tube it failed to feed. After first opening the gun I cleaned the bore and made sure it was lubed correctly so I was puzzled. I got the gun back into battery and it did it again. Now I am thinking its the ammo but my past experiences with the white box I knew it would be rare, especially 2 in a row. Upon further investigation I saw that the follower was sticking. I unloaded it and put it away to review later. I got home and pushed a ramrod into the tube and compressed the spring, it was definitely sticking. I had a hunch it was expanding so I left it on the cold concrete in the garage for awhile and it jumped back into position. I emailed my issues to Henry and I should get a response back tomorrow being Monday. My issue is this, why put a cheap piece of plastic inside a brass tube to begin with? Plastic expands at a much faster rate than brass, so unless I got a bad stamped piece of plastic this will happen again. I noticed the replacement tube is $21.50, glad its cheap but I would pay more for one with a metal follower! I believe this is a poor design, a lever gun is only as good as its spring and follower.
Any input would be appreciated, thanks folks.

Welcome from the Texas Panhandle.
I'll bet Henry will send you a new follower for free, if you contact them.

I wonder if you could sand the original one down to a smaller diameter?

I will sand it down, once I get a spare. I have to knock out the push pin and reset once I am done. I probably should get a new pin in case I damage the existing one. I am searching the internet now looking for a steel follower, but all I see so far is Marlin upgrade replacements.

Thanks Panhandle, from KC

Welcome from Georgia.
Sorry to hear of your problem, but you were pretty clever to set it in the cold thinking it would contract. Henry has a great reputation, so I wouldn't get too upset with the gun, but I do understand your being frustrated with a malfunctioning new gun. Have you been to the Henry forum?

Thanks Ridgerunner, I am trying to be patient. Henry contacted me this morning and wants me to send the gun back to them. I wish they would just send me the new tube assembly but I understand their desire to look at the whole thing to make sure. I have not been on the Henry forum yet, I will head their now. I can't find a good follower to replace the plastic so I will make one out of 316SS tubing with a flat cap. If it works I will post a pic.

Welcome from Colorado! I've heard nothing but good things when it comes to Henry's customer service. Like ridge said I'd try the Henry forum, a couple good guys from this forum run the Henry forum and guys from Henry regularly respond to inquiries on that forum. Malfunction with a new firearm are frustrating but seem pretty rare with Henry's.

Sometimes on plastic parts, the mold line isn't trimmed smooth. It can be sanded off, or shaved off with a box cutter. Had that problem once with some pistol magazine followers.

Thanks for the advice guys, I sent it off today and will see what happens. Love that gun, want it back. I have to face the fact that my 48 year old eyes are having some issues with the clarity of iron sights. As much as I hate to change the lines of the gun, I had them send me a picatanny rail as well. I am thinking of putting on a reflex style red dot since my arms arent long enough to push it out away to see!

Update:
Henry is cool and they want to take care of us...period. They are taking care of business and sending me replacements. I am keeping the old tube as well and getting a spare pin so I can modify my old one with a brass or stainless follower. I will turn one out on a lathe and experiment until I get it right. Hey, at least it happened at the range and not looking at the business end of a ticked off boar!
