Congratulations on scoring a 39A. I just got one made in 1989 last month.

I haven't seen one in the wild yet but hope that when I do it will be worth the asking price. And more importantly I hope I will be able to afford it. Keep us posted when you shoot it.

Rman, a "J" would make it a 1952. Not a big deal, but I do have an "H" which was made in 1951, a year that is famous in 39A history for being the "peanut" edition. It was the only year Marlin put a brass plate in the pistol grip cap so you could have your initials engraved on it. Marlin even offered to do it as a service, once you sent the plate to them.

Marlin was still using conventional rifling in both years. The microgroove didn't show up for another year. You might also check the tang on your 39 to see if it is drilled and tapped for a tang peep. Mine is. That disappeared after 52.

You'll get an argument either way on the microgroove, but I don't consider it to be an absolute necessity. Nothing in the world of 22 rifles ever seems to be that cut and dried. I'd put a peep on your 39, grab a variety of loads and head to the range to see what it can do. Only real way to know. We will be expecting pics and a range report, of course.

39s can clean up very, nicely, with a little work. My '51 wasn't much to look at when I found it in a pawn shop, but it's a looker, now. As long as the action and bore are good, you're in business.
