I'm new here and have recently obtained several original Winchester lever action rifles. My question pertains to proper reloading for an original. Specifically, I have an 1873 SRC in 38-40 (mfg 1894). The rifle is in fair condition. The rifling is present but no matter how many patches I run through the barrel, they still come out BLACK. My gunsmith looked at it and after he determined it was definitely safe to shoot, I started researching some reloads. I find that 6.5 gr Trail Boss holds a nice group at 50 yds. NOW WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS -IS THIS TOO HOT OF A LOAD TO SHOOT OUT OF THIS RIFLE? I also have an original 1892 (mfg 1904) in 38-40 good condition that I have been using this same load with excellent results at 50 yds. Appreciate any input as well as other similar sites where I can learn more about these fabulous rifles. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. .When asking reloading questions, for some one to help you, they need all the data. Powder/grains(you got that). Bullet type/weight. The case overall length you seated the bullet to( COL) & it does not hurt to know the primer type used & the brass mfg. | |

Sounds like you got a good load . If you have Unique try 6.0 gr it is dirty but cost 1/2 of the Trail Boss to reload and Unique is been around longer then your rifles . ![]() ![]() |
