Hi, was wondering if there was any info on the web about which specific models of 99's had the case hardened (instead of blued) coloring on their levers? Was there a certain year or certain 99 models that Savage began that process? I have a couple of older 1920's+/- 99's that the metal is a completely worn to steel coloring nearly all over and don't know if the levers were ever case hardened from the factory or not. I could not find this specific info on the Savage99.com web site. Thanks in advance for info along these lines.

I don't know much about 99 lever guns . But I love Downingtown PA . I spent and raised and lot of hell there in 60's and 70's I dated Miss Feasterville , Miss Glenside , Miss Bucks County , Miss Bell Telephone and Miss GO-GO of Philly area . I had a new 66 Mustang GT 4 speed with 271 HP 289 and also had a new 66 Triumph Bonnieville which was never got beat in a street race , I only weighted 135 lbs at 23 yrs old . And had money to burn at that time .

I'm relatively new to 99s, but have been looking at them for some years, now. I can't say I've ever seen one with a blued lever, but I certainly have seen some with the case hardening rubbed off to the point of being bare metal. Still a lot of old 99s around being shot. Most of the common models like the EG that I have seen, though, have the case hardened levers and receivers. One of the things I learned about 99s, now that I am a 99 owner, is that there is a lot of fuzzy info floating around on the net about the various models, differences and specs. Not an easy gun to track down as to specs on the various models. Still, the 99 is in a class by itself as far as lever guns go. Have no doubt I''ll be getting another one or two or ... |
