I recently bought a model 99 ser # 671... that I assume was late 50s or so production. I realize many variations of this rifle were made, but this one has an 18" barrel, which seems to be somewhat uncommon...everything else seems pretty standard...schnoble forearm...pistol grip. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum. I take it you are talking about the Savage. What caliber is yours?

300 savage....has factory checkering on the forearm and grip. has been drilled/tapped for a weaver mount..not factory.....pretty much a standard 99, except for the short barrel.

I'm just starting on 99s, so can't say for sure, though I know 22" was, by far, the most common in that chambering. My 250 Savage is 20" and even that is a bit uncommon. Been trying to research 99s on the net and one thing I can say for sure, it's pretty fuzzy. |

Just an update...took the savage 99 to local semi-gunsmith....he said many variations over the years ( fuzzy was the right term)....it was a 19" barrel... rare but not un heard of ...numrich lists a spare 19' for model 99 but square rifled as for a take-down model...yadda yadda, until you go nuts. Ive got an old buddy in PA , peeing his pants over it...so will quit obsessing over the littlt things...mount a waever k4 or k6 on it and make his day.
