Better Day at the Range Today

My last day at the range on Tuesday was pretty lousy on 3 counts. First I pinched the krap out of my finger with the slide of my Range Officer. (don't get smug, you've all done it) Shot okay with the RO and Volquartsen Scorpion, nothing great. Then I was going to shoot 48 rd with the GP100 .357 and only shot 3 because it was binding up really badly. So I left early and when I got to the parking lot I had a flat tire. So I went home and took the GP apart to it's main components. Mainspring out, trigger group out, hammer and cylinder out. First time I've taken a revolver down beyond taking the grips off. Curious if people do that regularly?? So I Gunscrubbered everything and re-oiled it. I didn't see anything funny inside, but it's working great again.

So today I shot the same 3 guns. Only 12 rd of 38 SPL and 12 rd of .357 in the GP100. Nothing great, the best I did was this 10 yd single action group with .357 ammo. I had a 3/4" group going til that last one at 10 o'clock.

Shot 50 rd of .45 with the Range Officer. Got a 99-2X on a 50 ft timed fire target. That's the best I've scored with it on an NRA target.

I did have an FTL. I've had 5 FTL's in 788 rd and 4 of those have been with the same Wilson Combat 7 rd magazine. One was with a factory mag, but that was in the first box of ammo. The 2 Wilson Combat 8 rounders I bought have been flawless.

Then I shot 110 rounds of .22 with the Volquartsen. On my last target I shot a 100-3X timed fire, so I went out on a high note. Pretty good day overall, and no more flats in the parking lot. Got 4 new tires yesterday. Hard to believe a CHEAP set is now $ 500. I was NOT that long ago I could get 4 tires installed for $ 200.

Good shooting and no flats! I hope you bought a lottery ticket on your way home? Couldn't hurt with such a good turnaround in luck....

My last shooting trip was the best in a while, and now I don't feel guilty about it.

When my SP-100 starts binding, it's usually crud buildup in the front of the chambers, or under the ejector. The rims don't seat 100%.

Adding this to my old thread just to show off this target. I braved the -7 temp to make it to the range at the opening. I didn't really do anything great with the Security Six or the Shield 9mm, but it was a good day of .22 shooting with the Volquartsen Scorpion. On the first 10 shots, I shot a 100-7X 50 ft timed fire. Alas, I won't save this target for posterity, since the .22 string was shot right over a lackluster 38 special group. I circled the .22 holes in the pic, ignore the bigger holes. I haven't shot a 100 in a while. I did the whole dry run of the .22 league later, and got 567/600, despite not doing great on the slow fires. Best I've got in the actual league is 559. I've shot a couple of 571's and a couple of 570's in practice.

That is truly impressive. Congrats on nailing one of those perfect scores. Always a thrill. I'm assuming an indoor range right?

Thanks--Technically, not a perfect score, which would be 100-10X, Haven't made that yet. I had a 100-9X with one missing by about 2 millimeters. Yes, it's indoor. Only a couple of weeks til the good deal I got on the "grand opening" 2 year membership runs out. I got 2 years for $420 total, now it's going to cost me $499 for one year to re-up. Still better than paying $700 at the dump a mile from here that they call a range.

Of course, you didn't shoot a perfect "perfect" score or you'd have nothing left to shoot for, right? Good plan.

Yeah. that sounds like a lot of money, but for a place to shoot that you like and enjoy and as much as I shoot, I'd have no qualms about paying that price. I'd get my money out of it. I know how tough it can be to find a good place to shoot in urban areas.
