Finally Made it Back to the Range

Finally took the bull by the horns and went back to the gun range today, despite having not much of a straight answer on why I collapsed and wound up in the emergency room on the last range trip. (almost 3 months ago) I took it easy and shot only 60 rd of .22 and 50 rd of very light 44 mag. Did about half of the shooting standing up and about half sitting down. I think the days of holding my breath for 5 or 10 seconds lining up a slow fire shot are about over, unless my cardiac health improves somehow. About 10 shots like that makes me light-headed. So I have to keep breathing and time the shot to the full breath. But I did okay, and lived to tell the tale.

This was 10 shots at 25 yd offhand with HSM Cowboy 44 Mag. Only one shot away from the coveted 2" group, and the flyer put it to 2 3/8". I'll take it.

This one was 12 shots at 25 yd bench rested with my rudimentary tripod. 1 3/4", and once again only 1 shot away from a 1 1/4".

The Matchdot 2 on my Smith 629 was SUPER dim even at the top setting. It was taking me a good 5 seconds just to find the dot every time I raised the gun. That's why I decided it might be a good idea to try some bench rested shots. I had several spare batteries with me, but didn't want to mess with it. I put a new battery in when I got home, and I THINK it's better. Not sure though--the range faces south and I was there at noon, so it does tend to wash out a red dot. Good to get out, and it was a nice day, with 68 degrees and sunny.

Looks a lot better than I can do. My last range trip was August, and I only got to go three times last year. Usually 8-9, but a lot of tasks and weather fouled it up.

First trip this year, my groups will probably be a foot.....

Shaky if it were me I would make an appointment and take a road trip to either Cleveland, OH for the Cleveland Clinic or Rochester, MN for the Mayo Clinic and find out the cause of your health issue. Those two are by far the best in the country.

As one who does a LOT of offhand shooting at 25 yards and as someone who loves the challenge of shooting 2" groups that that distance, let me say congratulations on that fine offhand group. I know what it takes to get such a group. Truly a challenge.

I will also echo what others are saying, Shakey. Get to the bottom go that health issue. Could be as simple as getting dehydrated - has happened to my husband - but it could be more serious. Glad to see you're out shooting, again, though. Good for you.

As for the red dot, were you using the 2 MOA size? Sometimes it helps to go with a larger size for the sake of visibility.

Going to the Mayo Clinic is nice on paper, but my Blue Cross HMO won't pay one dime for it, unless I "co-incidentally" happen to be right by it when I need emergency care. I am trying to do what I can for the health issues, but it's just very slow and frustrating down here. The neurologist I went to wanted me to get an MRI in Tucson. I pointed out that I could get an MRI in Sierra Vista 10 miles away, instead of Tucson, 70 miles away. He wants me to get it done in Tucson "where I know it will be done right." So I got an appointment in Tucson, almost 3 weeks down the road. They have to pre-qualify it with my insurance. So I kept looking at my Blue Cross page. No record of prequalification after 2 weeks, so I called the MRI place. Oops we forgot. So they say again that they'll send in in, and they give me an appointment ANOTHER 3 weeks down the road. A few days later my Blue Cross shows a pre-qualification, not for a brain MRI, but for a "Computer Aided Detection Diagnostic Mammography." Great, so I call them again and they say they submitted the wrong code. So supposedly that's fixed and I'm going in March 7th, now at almost 3 1/2 months after the original incident. So the "place where iit will be done right" isn't inspiring much confidence. Also the most expensive place in the area for an MRI, $5500 vs $3750 for the place 10 miles away. Haven't heard anything from the cardiologist either, since I had the ultrasounds.

You know, I'm so used to using the smallest dot i can get, it's never occurred to me to even try the larger settings. I'll have to try that if I get the dim dot issue again.
