Been doing some talking to the trap shooters around here, and it seems that most of the people are using a powder called Promo. It's has the same burn rate as Red-Dot which makes it pretty versatile for loading 12 gauge target loads. It runs about $85 for 8 lbs. The only complaint I hear is that it's a little dirty. I'm thinking about switching to 1 oz loads for 16 yard trap and keeping the 1 1/8 oz 18.5 grains of 700X for handicap. There just a little to hot to shoot 3-4 boxes of in a hour or so. ![]() Any of you guys use this stuff before? |

never heard of it..........but at $85 per 8 pounds.......i'd sure give it a try as thats just a tad over $10/pound....... be awful tempted to find some recipes for it in handgun rounds as well.......if similar to red dot, it ought to work in 45's............ |

It's supposed to be the same as Red Dot, but it is a little more dense. All that means is if your using a powder bushing you will have to run a size smaller. But the burn rate by weight is the same, so you can use the same recipes.

i'd say go for it........ or find another shooter that's using it and try to buy a pound off of him to try out before you take the plunge......... appreciate the heads up on this......... |

Looks Interesting - http://www.alliantpowder.com/products/powder/promo.aspx Promo® Smokeless shotshell powder America's number one economy-priced 12 gauge target powder. Promo has the same burn speed as Red Dot, but is more dense, thus requiring a smaller bushing to obtain the same charge weight. Budget priced Economical trap, skeet and sporting clay loads Easy metering and consistent charging Principal Purpose: Light and standard 12 ga target loads. Secondary Uses: Handgun loads Remarks: Reliable performance shot after shot. Standard charge weights work great. Canister Sizes: 8lb |

I have been using Alliant Clay Dot powder for skeet down here and it is very clean burning. Currently (until I finish with whats left of the 5,000 Claybuster 1 1/8 oz wads I bought) I am loading 17.5 gr under 1 1/8 oz loads with a Win 209. If it wasn't for the plastic wad build-up I wouldn't have to clean at all until I was ready to leave. I have gone thru about 1,500 shells this year, down from 2,300 in prior years. If you find the Promo dirty then give the Clay Dot a try the next time you need to buy. It is only sold in 8# containers. I have heard you won't notice any difference dropping down to an Oz and many down here are shooting 7/8 Oz. |

Well, I went and picked up 8 lbs of the stuff, along with 50 lbs of 7 1/2's, 1000 Cheddite primers, and another 500 1 oz Claybuster wads. That should last me a week or two. ![]() I'm going to try and load some up tomorrow, and hope to get to the range to try them out Tuesday (if the weather holds). |

I know this is an old thread but I am considering trying promo. I would like to know you guys thoughts on it now that you have used it for awhile, or at least 8 pounds of it. Thanks ahead of time. |

Of those that posted in on the thread I'm the only one still posting here regularly. Are you planning on loading shotshell with it and if so for claybirds or hunting? Why not go into the new users section and introduce yourself? |
