Savage 99

I have just purchased a savage 99 250-3000 takedown-22" round barrel-serial # 354xxx. I have not seen it in person as of yet, but have seen a picture which shows a square appr.1" hole in the stock on the LEFT buttstock. It looks like it belongs there, but needless to say i don't know. Do any of you guys know anything about this.
Thanks
ron

Hello Ron and welcome How long have you been retired? Do you still live on a farm?

I only know what I've read about your gun but it does seem to have some interesting history. As a gun collector you will appreciate it im sure. Did you get a rotary mag with it?

I found that the 250-3000 is said to be the first cartridge to send a bullet 3000 ft/sec.(at 87 grains.)

That has the light weight barrell for the .250 cal. great for small game. It sounds like one made between 1914 and 1920's when the Model 1899 was called the Model 99 and before it was 99 Savage model . If you spent less than $1200 for it and it's a good shooter you probably made a good deal from what I read. Be sure and tell us how it shoots when you get it and show some pics if you can. I don't know if it will be hard to find ammo for it.

Maybe a medallion or personal ID plate of some kind added by a previous owner? Hard to say.

You did well on that one. 99s in 250 around, here, are high desirable and scarce. They usually bring a bunch more than the fairly common 300 Savage. Would love to have one, myself. Will you be buying factory ammo or reloading for it? Check the twist rate. From what I've heard, the 250 in a 99 tends to be pretty fussy about what bullet weights it likes, depending on the twist rate.

250 savage 99 was big in Pa when I was a kid . I've never seen one that didn't shoot . Like NCG said the twist will tell the bullet weights you can shoot accurately . Can't wait to see a pic of it .
