I'm really impressed with the 17 CZ. The 22 win mag seems okay and I'm wondering if I should get a 22LR. Are CZs really that accurate or is it just the 17 caliber? What kind of results should I expect from a Henry in 17?

I got a flyer from Cabala's yesterday advertising the Henry .17. They must be starting to come around again, but I doubt they would be as accurate as that bolt action.

303, to answer your question about the 17 HMR (or for that matter, the 17 HM2), yes, it is an inherently more accurate round than the 22 LR. That ballistically efficient tip is a clue as to why. My Bill does most of the rifle shooting, these days, and I promise you, that, time after time, whether shooting a 17 in our CZs, our Marlin or our TC pistols, he shoots smaller groups than he does with any of our 22 LR rifles and we do have some fine 22 rifles. This cannot be a coincidence. As for the 22 LR accuracy in a CZ, I like James's description of "pleasantly accurate". Any CZ 22 LR rifle we've had, regardless of configuration, is capable of shooting down to half inch groups at 50 yards if you spend the time to experiment with different ammo and if you use a decent scope. Even our semi auto CZ 512 will do this. At the other end of things, I've never shot or heard of a CZ 22 LR that failed to shoot under an inch at 50 yards, even with the junkiest 22 LR ammo. Check some of my old range reports. As for the 22 mag accuracy, of all the rimfire rounds, I've found the 22 mag to be the most responsive to trying different brands of ammo and loadings. Try different ammo, for sure. As for the 17 HMR in a Henry, I would predict a bit more accuracy than with the 22 LR in the same model, but how much so I can only guess. You could head over to RFC and see if anyone has posted on this. Last edited by north country gal; 10-30-2014 at 07:09 AM. |

Next range day I'm going to take just one firearm and several brands/types of ammo. | |
