1968 Walther P38 info

Hello hope you all had a great New Years. My question in a bout a Walther P38 1968 highly blued pistol in very nice condition. I always wanted a Walther P38 and several years ago i found one at my local pawn shop for sale. At the time i did not know P38s at all just they were German and i thought they looked awesome and getting hard to find, so i bought it and put it away until recently i was cleaning it and figured what the hell ill look up the serial number and do some research on it. Well i was shocked to find out it was a post war pistol, in fact it was way after the war 1968 to be exact so i took it to a gun show for more info on it and the first vendor with a table full of Walthers i showed him the pistol. He told me i had a rare P38 not P1 with highly blued finish, which he did not have one and had only seen one before. Walther only made from 1967 to 1968 roughly (one year) which makes it a very limmited model, that said highly sought after by collectors. So my question is, was he telling my correctly is this model alittle rarer and more valuable then the wwii models due to limmitted production?

Have no idea how rare it is but the pitting on the slide and and chips on the trigger guard won't help the value.

It is only worth serious money to someone who is LOOKING for one of that model-- You could try to sell it on any number of firearms Forums, and see what the market will bear. I'd suggest looking it up in the "Blue Book of Gun Values", to see if it is indeed listed as a collector's item. But Walther P-38/P-1's are a very common handgun, I bought a P-1 some years ago and only paid around $200., if memory serves. They are fine shooters, and are generally more accurate than the common Military/Police issued handgun. They were first made before our involvement in WW II, were made during and after the war, and were one of the main issue side arms of the post war European Police, and other Police forces.

I see an Interarms rollmark on the slide. They were a gun importer based in Alexandria, Virginia; and they imported a lot of Walthers. So, your gun would likely be part of a regular production run, but as you were told, maybe just one year for your model. One year could be a very few, or thousands, who knows?

There are one or two Walther forums that may have the answer for you if you search their posts.

The typical price I see on a P38 is about $450. You would have to research the various markings to see if yours is more of a collector item, but rust pitting is not looked at favorably.

From what I can find, supposedly all P38s after 63 were considered P1s but should be so stamped. My P38 has different markings than yours, Interarns stamped only on the frame and only 5/63 stamped on the right side of the slide. When I researched it several years ago I was told it was originally a police issue. Mine has a serial #209XXX.
