Thanks for posting that Deputy. I have for years got that gun confused with this gun: http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg128-e.htm

I thought they were the same gun untill you made me do a little research.

Just to clarify, Clint used the automag (in Sudden Impact), Charles Bronson used the Wildey (in Death Wish 3).

+ 1 ....... The automag had a lot of problem with jams . There was about 4 different company's that built them and not 1 of them made it work that I know of . I would love to buy one that worked .

My uncle had a .22mag automag. It was a fun gun, but my mkII was way more accurate.

Re: the auto mag...........

Deputy,
True. The .308/ .30-06 head size makes it work for .45 acp and similar cases. Some of the high pressure .45 rounds use them and the Automag used them. The cases are cut, necked (if a bottleneck round), and inside reamed. This gives the thicker web needed with the unsupported chamber of the 1911. I think the old .38/.45 Clark cases were made this way. I think that was intended to give reliable feeding for target use but people loaded them up, trying to make .357 Magnums out of them.

Re: the auto mag...........

They were recoil operated but had a turning bolt lockup with six or twelve lugs. They were supposed to give .44 Magnum power with significantly less recoil and lift. This was when the .44 Mag was king but it was considered too much for most people. They were saying many .44 Magnum revolvers were sold with most of the first box of ammo. It is funny to say that given the much more powerful revolvers on sale today.

Re: the auto mag...........

As Mac has said, it is true. I have never done it, I use Starline brass, Hornady 240 XTP, and H110 or 2400 powder. Clean the action often and its fun to shoot.

Who made your auto mag .......... The later ones should be made of different grades of stainless to stop the galling problem they had with the entire gun made in the same grade of stainless . I always wanted one in 357 automag . I still have the special stainless steel grease they made for it to stop the galling problem which I use on my all stainless guns . http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w357automag.html

Re: the auto mag...........

I think that's Tool and Die of El Monte , which they had ties with AMT when it was in El Monte at one time ... I think you have the best Automag ever built .

got me to thinking..........should they had done the same thing with the 10mm and trim that down to 40 s&w length. This might help with the kaboom problem with certain 40 cal pistols with unsupported chambers..........

Re: the auto mag...........

I think they had to thin the web to increase capacity in order to meet the performance specs that were called for. If I recall, it was Gunrunner that posted this here. They are really getting a lot of performance out of a small case. It makes very compact guns possible but it does reduce the margin for error.

Re: the auto mag...........

Now the 45acp is the only +P that is thicker web , below is from Starline . [I still have the reamer to make 45 +p case from 308 brass] ...

45 AUTO +P (Large Pistol primer) .892"-.897" O.A.L.
[1520]

The 45 Auto+P is a strengthened version of the 45 Auto with the same external dimensions. A thicker web and heavier sidewall at base strengthens the case in potentially unsupported areas. This case has approximately 2 grains less internal water capacity than the standard 45 Auto.

Bo Clerke in New Mexico now was a shooting buddy many moons ago designed the 38/45 and at that time he used stock 45 brass . How Clark got his name on it I don't know .
