How about the SKS. Any opinions?

I am a proud owner (for 16yrs) of an SKS, Chinese 7.62x39 semi-auto rifle. Through the years I have used it for Deer, large varments like coyotes, badgers and bobcats and has never failed me. What do ya think?

Re: How about the SKS. Any opinions?

I think the SKS was once upon a time one of the better bargin rifles to be imported........especially when they were under $90.00

hits almost as hard as a 30-30, decent capacity, no magazines to lose, and inexpensive ammo......simple upkeep. My daughter has one. Matter of fact a lot of folks around here have one and prefer them to levers for hog guns. Just a stout rifle that takes abuse and throw behind the seat of the pickup.

Main thing i dislike is the trigger.......still think they are more accurate than an AK......

SKS is a good rifle. The only one's I see mess up are one's that people try to turn into an AK. Those aftermarket detachable mags (that the gun was not designed to use) suck. Keep it the way it is, and the SKS is very dependable rifle.

Re: How about the SKS. Any opinions?

I did get a sporter stock for mine, as the issue stock was made for midgets and TGR sized people... I killed a lot of deer with it , then foolishly traded it for a Marlin .444, which I traded for a Colt .45 that used to be mine anyway...

When I bought the thing I got 500 rounds of ammo with it and several dollars change back from my $100 dollar bill... It was almost as cheap to shoot as a .22 back then.

I remember back in the late 80s/early 90s going into a gun show in Louisville. The first dealer there had crate after crate of them still in the cosmoline for $50 each! Wish I would have bought a crate of them now!

I like the SKS. Good little rifles that'll work in more than one situation. Good choice in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum.

I still have a decent stash of 7.62x39 on hand after selling my Mini-30 months back. I've been thinking that an SKS may fit the bill. One of my buddies has had one for years and seems to like that little rifle quite a bit.

welllll back in the early 90s my pops bought up a bunch of em on the cheap. Guess he new a good thing when he saw it. I was born in 88 so as far back as I can remember Ive been shooting sks rifles. Shot every factory kind and did almost all the tinkering you can legally do. Since Ive owned prolly 100 or more sks rifles and several dozen aks. Actually dad still has the very same russian sks i took my first shots with. With all that being said, Im very fond of a sks in any trim, and have found them to be one of the most rugged guns on the market. Every time Im out buying guns I have to look at everyone I see no matter how many I have. GUESS YOU COULD SAY I LOVE THEM.

I think they are great guns .... I don't have one anymore and I made mine to take the AK 47 magazines , which is a big plus to the gun .

I also love aks and the option for a bigger mag, but something about a sks when you work on them and see the internals and such alot, screams reliable...sturdy, trust me...Ive also grown to respect those factory ten round mags. Having ninty percent less trouble than any detachable mag or mag kit ive ever owned.

I've done 4 in my life and all worked 100% , the only thing I didn't like was the gun needed to be turned upside down to lock bolt back to change mags because the bolt stop spring needed to be removed to make the kit work .

Stamped or machine receiver , screw in or pinned barrel they all work the same like the AK's , you can put 1000's round thur them with no problems .
