My 6.8 SPC Build

I thought I'd start a thread (posted at another forum when I was wide awake at 3:30am) on the new rifle I'm building.
I've toyed with the idea of building one for a while now, but really didn't know what I wanted to build.
By that, I mean, I didn't know what caliber - I have a couple 223/556 rifles, so I knew I didn't want to build something I already had.
Thought about 6.5 Grendel since it works on an AR15 platform and has some really great qualities.
Thought about the 6.5 Creedmoor - AR10 platform and I don't have that.
Also read some about the 6.8 SPC…

I just didn't do anything cause I couldn't decide which one to go with (yes, I've read about the calibers, pros vs cons) until recently.
An member at the other forum posted up a Daniel Defense 6.8 SPC barrel & complete bolt carrier group here for sale.
I guess that post made my mind up after a bit of research on these components.
I bought those 2 items to start the process.

I started buying parts when I had a little extra money and was just going to take my time acquiring the parts.
Didn't want to purchase anything on credit, so that was the reason for a little bit at a time.
Until I got my Longevity pay this past Friday.

Y'all are tired of reading and I know you want to know what all I've got.
And, I know you want pictures, but those will have to wait till it's a proper morning (like 9-10am).
But, I'll list what I've got so far…some of the parts are in hand and others I'm waiting to arrive, but everything listed except a couple items, has been purchased.

Here ya go:
Daniel Defense 16" barrel
Daniel Defense complet BCG
Magpul K2 Grip (black)
CMMG Gun Builders Kit (LPK w/o Trigger/Grip)
Anderson Stripped Lower (black)
Seekins Precision Trigger Guard (FDE)
Geissele Super 3 Gun Trigger
Spike's Tactical Carbine Buffer Kit (ST-T2)
Mission First Tactical BattleLink Minimalist Stock (FDE)
Aero Precision Upper (w/FA, dust cover) (FDE)
Midwest Industries Free Float Rail (15") (FDE)
Midwest Industries LP Gas Block
*Gas Tube
*BCM Gunfighter Charging Handle (Medium)
*Front Sight (Troy M4 Style Battle Sight)
Matech Rear Sight

Items with * are what I still need to get.
Thinking about getting another grip in FDE and save the K2 for something else.

I'll post up pictures of the items I have on hand right now (and when I get more in), later this morning.
And, as I build it.

I'm having fun with this!
It's like when I built my first bicycle, getting all the parts and learning how to do it in the process of building.

Let's see; she cooks, shoots very well, rides a mean motorcycle, and builds a rifle. Pretty much the perfect woman.
You are in good company here with NCG and Sightngrl.

Looking forward to this project as it comes together.

I'm glad she's here, too. I am a complete dummy on military guns and black guns. I'm learning something, here.

Thanks RetiredSeabee.

These are the only parts I have in hand right now.
Got an email earlier today - my Upper Receiver will be here Tuesday.

AR's are one of the easiest and hardest rifles to build. Back in the 90's you could buy the parts and put one together for less than you could buy a complete rifle. This was especially true of Colts.

Definitely fun.

I believe the stock and trigger guard will arrive today or tomorrow.
If not, most or all will be here by Tuesday.
I'll get busy on putting it all together soon.

They are really a simple design once you learn where all the springs and pins are.

This is timely for me. I just bought an 80% lower and an upper this past weekend. I've been waffling over what caliber to put together. I'd like something a little beefier than 5.56, but not so beefy that it breaks the bank

So, an update…
I got everything together last weekend and attempted to install a LanTac Dragon muzzle brake (in .308) onto the barrel.
It didn't fit, it was WAY too large of a diameter compared to the muzzle

After some discussion with the seller over the past day or so, it was determined that the seller was misinformed by the LGS where the barrel was purchased.

The threads on the Dragon are 5/8-24.
The threads on the barrel I had, 1/2-28, or similar to a 5.56.
Daniel Defense doesn't make 6.8 barrels in 1/2-28, only 5/8.

Was told it was a Wilson (not Combat) barrel, but since I'm really unsure as to who the manufacturer of the barrel is, I asked for a refund from the seller.
He agreed.

Tonight, I purchased an ARPerformance 16" 6.8 barrel (Socom, fluted) and a BCG.
Hopefully, those will be here by end of the week.

Buttstock is Mission First Tactical Minimalist in Scorched Dark Earth.
I had one in FDE, but it was a really yucky color.

Here are a few pics, the last being stuff put together, but without the barrel/bcg.

The yucky colored FDE stock that was sent back…

Just slapped the Aimpoint PRO on for giggles

This was really easy to assemble last week…
If I had the funds, I'd definitely build something else!

So Wolfpack65, how about a cost estimate for the build?

I won a NIB BlackRain 223 in a raffle last September.
I did some research and found it was a custom shop gun from BlackRain.
I sold it for $1000.00
The sales price was $3200.00
I had no need for it as I prefer my AR 57.

KimberLover - I'll give you an estimation right now cause my spreadsheet with parts/cost is at work.
IIRC, it's about $1150-1200, as some parts were gifted and I haven't included them in the total cost.
