I went to take the stock off of my 12 gauge Model 12 and noticed two things: 1. I need to buy a much longer screwdriver than anything I currently own. ![]() 2. When I removed the butt plate, someone had scratched "M11" into the back of it. I don't know anything about the M11, is it possible the M11 and M12 share the same butt plate part? Is it possible this M12 is wearing an M11 stock? It fits, so the next question would be, are the stocks the same? The only reason it matters is when the stock is refinished I might look for a new butt plate that's in a little better shape than the one I have (which isn't bad at all, and might clean up nicely). But I'm curious as to what that M11 scribble might mean. Thanks. |

Did some looking... There is no Model 11 Winchester. That is short for the Model 1911 Autoloading Winchester which is the basic Browing humpback design. The stocks would not interchage, but the butt-plates very well might. Although, if you were going to replace the butt-plate on yours, I would not look for a 1911. They were only made between 1911 (duh) and 1925. For all of that, they don't blue book very high, mine says $560 for an excellent one. People want the orginal Browning, or the Remington (made under the licence of Browing) model 11. By the butt plates clean up very nice when polished with a paste wax. Also, any SMALL scratches can be lighty buffed out with a 3M buffing pad. As to why that's M-11 is written on the inside of your butt-plate...well...if only guns could talk. ![]() |

Thanks. Okay so if the stock fits the gun - and it does - then it's likely a M12 stock and, hence, an M12 butt plate. so if mine doesn't clean up very well, I'm looking for an M12 butt plate. But I'll try the above recommendations to clean that one up. I just today got myself a loooonnng screwdriver to take the stock off!
