Ithaca model 37

Have any of you folks ever hunted with an Ithica Model 37? I've had this one since my teen years and did a lot of rabbit hunting after school.. brought our guns to school in our trucks and I don't believe that we offended any one. I still have it after all these years but don't hunt anymore. It was mfg in 1957..just turning 60 years old. I like the fact that it ejects the spent shells from the bottom of the receiver. It's in 16ga. full choke...I'm gonna give this one to my grand daughter in a few years. Rich

I inherited an Ithaca Featherweight 12 ga from my dad. No recoil pad and shooting it was like getting kicked by a horse. Guess it didn't bother dad much but I traded it off.

Rich, I cut my teeth on pheasant hunting with a 20 gauge Model 37. Used it for many years, not only on pheasants, but also quail and waterfowl. What I liked most about the 37 was not only its light weight - light enough for any gal to carry - but also its short reach and short pump cycle. Always lusted after a Model 12 Winchester, but my short arms could not handle that long reach and cycle. The 870 was better, but still not as good fit for me as the 37.

The one thing I did not like about the 37 was the way it would jam up and lock like a bank vault if you didn't completely cycle the gun to the rear before pumping back forward. Other than this issue with "short shucking", loved the gun.

I sometimes see used ones for sale and am tempted for old time's sake, but my bird hunting days are over, so I just move on, content with all my great memories.

Had the 37 lock up on me one day. I dug the shell out and it added to the list of reasons not to hang onto it. I shot skeet one season with an 870 and never had the short stroke issue.

The 37 could be brutal in the recoil department in a 12 gauge, for sure. Hunted for a bit with a borrowed 16 gauge 37, though, and recoil was not bad, plus the gun handled superbly. Really think the 16 was the sweet spot in the 37.

I did change over to an 870, eventually (and successfully), to eliminate the short stroke issue. The 870 also has the advantage of being a more modern, modular design. You can replace anything on an 870 on your own without gunsmith. On a 37, timing issues begin to appear with wear, usually showing up when the gun starts dumping rounds from the magazine when cycled. Then you'll need help from someone who knows how to time the action and possibly some parts. The 37 is similar to the Model 12 in that when one wears out, it really wears out. An 870 can be kept running forever. Gets my vote as the best pump gun ever made.
