I shot a TC Contender 10" 30-30 with a 1 in 10 twist 165 gr BT offhand and Iron sights for many years in Pistol Silhouette and a XP100 I built in 308 with Iron sights and shot in creedmore position [ video ] . Both guns are shot 10 rds at 50 yds , 10 rds at 100 yds , 10 rds at 150 yds and 10 rds at 200 yds for a total of 40 rds at that time NO SCOPES were allowed . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3cnLeCF46A ...... The spotter show you the hits . I build the XP to carry on my dirt bike [ 2 wheel ] to hunt deer and coyotes in Ca over 200yds . Then years later I converted it to shoot it in pistol silhouette matches . The worse score I shot with this gun was 38 out of 40 in the last 2 years I shot it in matches . I shot over 17 perfect score [ 40X40 ] in a row with this gun . ![]() Last edited by tx gun runner; 10-27-2014 at 04:17 AM. |

TGR, you're preaching to the choir with me, of course, but, oh my, what nice rigs. I'm sure you miss them. For sure, I remember the uproar in the silhouette world over allowing scopes and, especially rifle scopes, on pistols in some of the competitions. A good friend of mine was a two time Nebraska big bore revolver state champ and he said that allowing scopes on handguns was the last straw for him. Really ruined the game for him. He never competed, again, but oh my, what a shooter he was (and still is). I learned a lot from him. I've messed with the 30-30 on the Contender, off and on, for a long time, both in 10" barrels and 14" barrels with and without muzzle tamers. The 10" barrels with factory loads were real kickers, but the 14" were not bad. With just about any factory 30-30 ammo, I could typically do inch and a half at 100 yards, but with reloads, getting under an inch, no problem. I will be getting back to the 30-30 in the Contender, again. We have a huge stash of factory 30-30 ammo to shoot up and we're down to only one old Marlin 30-30. May even go custom, this time around or maybe even AI. We'll see. |

It was the evil Taco hold using rifle scopes on pistols that stuck in his craw. You have to understand that he was in on the silhouette game from the beginning when it arrived in the States from Mexico as a way for the average hunter to practice shooting under actual field conditions. Having been a handgun hunter most of my life, I have to agree with him that shooting a Contender with a 24x rifle scope using the taco hold is a stretch as far as real world handgun hunting. Well, that was then, this is now and no going back. I should also mention that he was also a big advocate of the 357 Maximum in the Contender. Shot my first Max in one of his Contenders with his reloads. Talk about one hot smoking cartridge in a Contender! Last edited by north country gal; 10-27-2014 at 09:17 AM. |

In my day a pistol could not weight more then 4 lbs on the unlimited class and the same with production class . The TC Contender 10" with the early retread grips and forearm some were over weight . Some where down the line they had to change the weight rules to add a scope . The TACO hold isn't any funnier looking then the Creedmore shooting position I shot which is over 150 years old . I wish I had 1/2 the money I pissed away in shooting that game in traveling , entry fees and ammo , plus I shot 3 guns at each match . My guess is cost me over a $1000 a month .

I think the cost to the shooter and the decline in the number of ranges that could host a silhouette match had been the undoing of the game's popularity. One heck of a lot easier for a range to host an IDPA action match where the longest shooting distance is a whopping ten yards.

I did all that combat type matches in the 60's and 70's with a 1911 and a K frame . NO MORE for me . The Cowboy stuff is more fun and can be done in under 50 yds . They have a Wild Bunch match and it done with 1911 and Mount Horse match too . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W5inX6OQas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAe-Ep2dCC8 |

Some of the guys at the range have been talking about doing a Wild Bunch thing and asked if I'd be interested. My SA Mil spec would be legal for this if I just paint over the white dots on the sight.
